Reflection on outsourcing

For most of the year I live in Chicago. I love the windy city and very much enjoy the fact that I live there. More importantly I am so grateful to god for giving me to opportunity to be able to live there by granting me abundant success in a financial sense.

I recycle used plastic in a plant that I own in a small industrial part of china. I have 22 employees and my plant requires that I be there for approximately eight to sixteen weeks out of the year. The rest of the work I can do from home in Chicago.

I started out by helping my uncle in a glasses store. I would grind the lenses and do some cleaning and so forth. After I graduated college I moved out to a company in California were they manufactured plastic glasses frames.

This was about the time when people started making a big deal about outsourcing jobs to other countries. We used to get letters in the mail about how we were contributing to the collapse of the American economy and how we were immoral in our business dealings. This is no big deal, all large companies get junk mail like that and we were not exemption.

I told myself that these people do not understand anything about business and are naïve in thinking that everything Americas consume could be produced in this country with a workable profit. None of what they said bothered me in the slightest.

Then I moved to china to supervise a plant for the glasses company and got to know some people in the area. After fifteen years I managed to perches a small warehouse that I eventually converted into a plant. We perches plastics and recast it to fit the orders of American clients. We use mannequins primarily. Of rather we produce mannequins as well as recycle them. We also do plastic bottles and discarded video game systems, the list goes on.

After many years of business I have managed to get to a place in life were I’m financially secure and have time to do thing I have always wanted to do and reflect on my life.

And it is this stage in my life that I wonder if I was not in the wrong by choosing to conduct my plastic business in china without regard to the financial struggle of my fellow Americans. Are a couple of mannequins really worth depriving them of a livelihood?

I know I am perhaps being over dramatic but still, I wonder.
