Building pvc banners the new street art

Over the last few years, there has been a growth of public art with sculptures and murals appearing in shopping centres, streets and town squares. Large format printing is increasingly playing a role here as huge banners appear over buildings.   In some cases this is about advertising or publicity as brands use large buildings to promote their products or services.  Choosing a strong, simple image with a distinctive colour palette and clear design works well here. Some of these images are so striking, imaginative and attractive that they hardly even seem like advertising and, to the casual passer-by look more like a work of art – which is arguably what they are.

But these large format printing pieces are also good for preserving a city’s heritage. When HSBC wanted to refurbish its Sunderland branch, in Fawcett Street, a Grade 1 listed building constructed in the late 1800′s, for instance, it used huge pvc banners with an image of the building’s elegant and distinctive exterior to cover up the work that was being done behind it.

Obviously it’s essential in these situations not only to get planning permission but to consult local people. Even if your large format printing images look eye catching and beautiful to you and perhaps your customers, if your neighbours and those using the streets around don’t like them then you could be heading for a PR disaster. Whether you want to generate some controversy and debate – as poster advertising can do – is another matter but identifying the risks beforehand is very important.

These posters can also be used as a teaser – an enigmatic image or slogan on the pvc banners across a building where work is clearly taking place but little is known about what is going to happen on the site can generate interest amongst local people and potential customers.
